I say it is not possible to say he is the greatest, he is one of the greatest. No one is the greatest, there are several greatest of their eras.

Yup everything was different in the 50's....just like almost everything was different in the 80's to how it is now.
I'm saying my opinion is that Fangio is the best, but I also agree with the fact that it is nigh on impossbile to make good comparisons over the eras.
Sure nowadays the cars have a higher power to weight ratio....but they also have downforce, better tyres, better brakes....and the threat of almost certain death if you make a big enough mistake is gone.

Mika and Schumi are the greatest drives I have ever seen..

In the 50's the power density was way lower than today, the cars everything was different. Today such a performance as Fangio had is not possible anymore. Winning every second race for years. It is simply not comparable.

@spencesaab I don't debate anyone who says Fangio is greater than Schumacher because there's just as good an argument. But when it's Schumacher v Senna - I just feel some people's minds are clouded by a sense of sentimentality.

"Immature of F1 knowledge"? that's a bit strong:
When F1 started in 1950 Fangio was already 37, in addition to this he missed all of the 1952 season suffering from a broken neck. This resulted in an inability to hold his head perfectly straight ever after.
Despite this he won 5 world titles in just in just 7 years of F1. His record was not beaten until Schumi in 2003 (after 12 years of F1)
Fangio's % wins per races is the best of all time. Schumi is def a true great but, Fangio is the greatest |
